The Greenmount Carpet Cornish Rebels started off the 2018 South West League by welcoming new boys Dorset County Giants to The Recreation Ground, Camborne.
After a long journey on the Bank Holiday weekend the Giants came with the intention of causing an upset against the three time SWRL champions, and sending out a statement to the rest of the league.
The Rebels kicked off playing up the slope and despite some strong running from the Giants forwards took and early lead as Shaun Ellis raced away from 30 yards to score in the corner, Assistant Coach Jimmy Elliott missed the conversion attempt.
The Rebels scored straight from the kick off as centre Decarlo Trerise, sponsored by Cornish Pirates investment company Tamahere Ltd, bagged the first of his two tries, Elliott this time adding the extras from in front of the posts, 10-0 to the Rebels with 10 minutes gone.
The Giants however still always looked a threat in the forwards, and there was no stopping Andy Bowditch from close range as he crashed over, Mayall converting, Rebels 10 Giants 6 after 20mins.
Pete Mabbott, sponsored by Darrens Cars Airport Transfers, proved a handful for the Giants defence as the Rebels hit straight back, Elliott again converting.
After a string of penalties the Giants found themselves in the Rebels half and the forwards again causing the Rebels defence problems when Ben Spear carried three Rebels defenders over to score, Mayall failing to add the extras.
Two minutes into the 2nd half and it was Mabbott again, scoring his second and with the extras from Elliott. Prop Andrius Zachorovas, sponsored by Glynn Hopkinson, dominated in the middle all afternoon and if anything, got stronger in the second period. He was lucky not to find himself on the score sheet in an impressive display.
Hughes hit back for the Giants, and a Mayall conversion, bringing it back to a 6 point game.
Playing down the slope the Rebels started to build some pressure as captain James Elliott, sponsored by Ewan Simpson, danced through the Giants defence from 10yds out to go in next to the posts for an easy conversion.
More dominate forward play from the Giants put them deep in the Rebels half, but mistakes and strong defence from the young Rebels side, kept them at bay until Decarlo Trerises interception to race 65 yards to score under the posts, and put some daylight between the sides, Elliott converted making it 34-16.
The Giants were far from done when Ben Spear raced away to score next to the posts, Mayall converting and Meaker rounded off a great first outing for the Giants again Mayall adding the extras.
Final Score Cornish Rebels 34 Dorset County Giants 28
