Royal Navy take Maritime spoils.

A much improved Royal Navy team ran out 6-50 point winners at Camborne in the annual Maritime Shield match, but the Rebels were left with plenty of positives to take from their first game of 2018.

The Navy, virtually unrecognisable from the one which was defeated by the Rebels in 2017, started well and notched up 5 tries without reply in the first half, and 4 conversions sent the hosts in at the break trailing by 28.

The Greenmount-sponsored Cornish Rebels could feel somewhat hard done by though, having created plenty of chances but showing the rustiness of a team on its first run-out in the last quarter.

The highly physical element of the game continued in the second half and it was the Navy who again drew first blood, but the conversion was missed and the Rebels broke in for their try through Jack Scott who is sponsored by Darren’s Cars Airport Transfers. Jamie Prisk (sponsored by Ewan Simson) converted and shortly after, a solid phase of play ended with James Martin making a signature 50-metre break.

By now it felt that another Rebels try would give the momentum back to the home team but the mistakes continued and despite the Rebels finding their groove by the last third, the Navy were highly disciplined and had to defend immensely to hold the Rebels up over the line several times as the hosts were now banging on the door.

Strong displays came, of course, from returning trio Jonny Platt, Ash Lawton (sponsored by Glynn Hopkinson) and Kye Beasley who haven’t played for the club for two years, and as ever, standout performances came from club stalwarts Martyn Lawrace, Decarlo Trerise and Peter Mabbott which should provide some encouragement for the season ahead.

The Rebels look forward to welcoming Dorset County Giants to Camborne next Saturday in the first game of the 2018 South West Rugby League season. Once again it will be played at Camborne RFC and kick-off is 2:30pm – Free entry.
